PATIENT EDUCATION

Understanding peptides, GLP-1 and GIP

Before starting any program, it helps to understand what you are taking and why. Below is a plain-language overview of peptide therapy, how the newer metabolic medications work, and how safety and side effects are managed by your care team.

Medical reference: Endocrine Society — GLP-1 Action and Receptor Localization

Illustration of a peptide: a short chain of linked amino acids

What are peptides?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids — the same building blocks that make up proteins, just much smaller. Your body already makes hundreds of them to act as messengers: they attach to specific receptors on cells and tell them what to do, such as release insulin, signal fullness, repair tissue, or regulate hormones. Therapeutic peptides are lab-made versions of those natural signals, designed to be more stable so a small weekly or daily dose can support a specific function.

  • Smaller and more targeted than a protein or an antibody
  • Work by binding to a specific receptor, not by broadly altering body chemistry
  • Most are injected or taken sublingually because stomach acid breaks them down
  • Dosing is individualized and titrated slowly by your clinician

GLP-1 vs. GIP — what is the difference?

GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) are both incretin hormones released by your gut after you eat. GLP-1 slows how quickly the stomach empties, supports insulin release when blood sugar rises, and signals fullness in the brain — which is why appetite decreases. GIP works on a parallel receptor and appears to influence how fat tissue stores and uses energy, and may soften nausea. Single-agonist medications target GLP-1 only; dual-agonists activate both GLP-1 and GIP receptors, which can produce stronger metabolic effects for some patients. Known to support diabetic treatment.

  • GLP-1: appetite signaling, slower gastric emptying, glucose-dependent insulin support aka: Semaglutide (Brand: Ozempic, Wegovy)
  • GIP: fat and energy handling, complementary insulin signaling, possible nausea buffering
  • Dual GLP-1/GIP agonists engage both pathways at once aka: Tirzepatide (Brand: Mounjaro, Zepbound)
  • Which pathway suits you depends on your labs, history, and tolerance — not on popularity

How does treatment actually work?

After your telehealth visit and lab review, treatment begins at the lowest effective dose. The medication mimics your body's own signal, so the effect builds over weeks rather than hours: appetite and cravings usually change first, then measurable changes in weight, energy, or lab markers. Your clinician increases the dose only when you are tolerating the current one, and holds or lowers it if side effects appear. Coaching, protein intake, hydration, and resistance training are part of the protocol because they protect muscle while fat loss occurs.

  • Start low, go slow — titration is scheduled, never rushed
  • Effects accumulate over 4 to 12 weeks and beyond
  • No additional fee to adjust or increase your dosage
  • Nutrition and coaching support are included to protect lean mass

Is it safe, and how are side effects managed?

Safety starts with screening: your clinician reviews your medical history, current medications, and labs to confirm a program is appropriate, and screens for conditions where these medications are not suitable. Medications are dispensed through U.S.-licensed pharmacies. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal — nausea, reflux, constipation, or fatigue — and are usually mild, dose-related, and improve as your body adapts. They are managed by pausing or lowering the dose, adjusting timing, increasing fluids and fiber, changing meal size, and when appropriate adding supportive medication. Rare but serious effects, such as pancreatitis or gallbladder problems, are discussed with you up front along with the warning signs that mean you should stop and contact us immediately.

  • Screening for contraindications before your first dose
  • U.S.-licensed pharmacy sourcing and clinician oversight throughout
  • Your routine blood tests can aide in tracking your treatment outcomes
  • Dose holds, dose reductions, and supportive care instead of quitting outright
  • Clear stop-and-call guidance for severe or persistent symptoms

What are Research Peptides?

Not sold by Agile Telehealth. Not FDA-Approved. Not recommended by Clinical Flow MD for Human Use.

Research peptides are short chains of amino acids studied in laboratory and clinical settings for their ability to signal specific biological processes — such as tissue repair, metabolism, immune response, hormone regulation, and cellular aging. They are research-grade compounds  for investigational or research use only and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease unless law allows to be prescribed by a licensed clinician as part of an approved medication.
